Colombian Police Bust Man Smuggling Cocaine In Toupee

In this screenshot taken from a video provided by the Colombian National Police, Colombian police catch a man smuggling packets of cocaine under his toupee at the airport in Cartagena, Colombia, Monda

In a daring attempt to smuggle drugs, Colombian police apprehended a 40-year-old man at Cartagena's airport. The suspect was caught trying to board a flight to Amsterdam with 220 grams of cocaine hidden beneath a meticulously attached toupee. The concealed drugs, valued at approximately 10,000 euros in European markets, were strategically placed under what authorities described as a 'narco wig'.

A police video released captured the moment an officer carefully removed the suspect's wig, revealing a dozen packets of cocaine. Further investigations revealed the suspect's criminal record, which included two prior drug trafficking convictions.

Cartagena Police Commander Gen. Gelver Yesid Peña emphasized that organized crime groups are exploiting young people by falsely suggesting they can easily bypass security measures. This incident serves as a reminder that such attempts are not foolproof.

Colombia has seen a rise in cocaine production since 2013, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. A recent report indicated a 10% increase in coca cultivation in Colombia in 2023, with potential cocaine production rising by 53% from the previous year.

Despite a 2016 peace agreement with FARC rebels aimed at reducing coca cultivation, smaller armed groups have stepped in to capitalize on the lucrative cocaine trade, perpetuating the issue.

Authorities continue to be vigilant in combating drug trafficking activities, employing advanced security measures to detect and intercept such illegal operations.
