Colleges of Education across Kentucky can now apply for grants to further the Kentucky Reading Project for Read to Achieve. Read to Achieve focuses on ways to improve literacy instruction for students K-through-3 with low reading ability. The program is being administered through the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education in partnership with the State Department of Education. Micki Ray is the Kentucky Department’s chief academic officer in the Office of Teaching and Learning. Ray said the aim goes beyond creating a culture and space for reading.
“It would be the instruction methods that would be utilized to ensure that students are able to decode text, to comprehend text, even in some cases around the reading and writing connection,” said Ray.
The CPE is awarding grants of up to $55,0000 to Colleges of Education. Ray envisions the professional learning sessions to take place over the summer months. The professional learning experience for teachers could involve instructional practices to data analysis.
“All of these things really working to increase effectiveness around reading instruction and ultimately to see an improvement in our student reading outcomes across the state,” said Ray.
The grants will go to public and private colleges of education through a competitive award process. CPE anticipates awarding eight grants to individual institutions.
