College football needs to do the right thing and stop calling these things bowl games

This is the online version of our daily newsletter, The Morning WinSubscribe to get irreverent and incisive sports stories, delivered to your mailbox every morning.

The college football season is over for all but four schools — Georgia, Michigan, TCU, and Ohio State (poor Nick Saban), who still have meaningful games left to play in the upcoming College Football Playoff.

There are a slew of other teams with one “game” left in their year, however, as it’s now the annual exhibition season when random schools square off in games that have no actual meaning but plenty of actual money to grab for a lot of people who won’t be taking the field in any of the games.

I’m talking, of course, about Bowl Season. This is when young football players get to live out their childhood dreams of playing in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl, or the Duke’s Mayo Bowl, or the LendingTree Bowl.

I’m kidding, of course — the names to those games and many others are pretty stupid and lost their meaning many years ago.

Here’s one thing I wish would happen, though — that the powers that be in college football would do the right thing and stop using the word “bowl” to label these games.

This yearly disrespect to the Super Bowl (which should be played on Saturday night) must stop and it must stop now! We can’t have college football constantly bringing down the importance of the word “bowl” by using it in names of games like the Cheez-It Bowl, or the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, or the Quick Lane Bowl.

Those are all very rude uses of the word. Very rude! We just can’t let this keep happening. We are better than this!

Here’s an easy fix to this situation. For those really dumb titles that have no meaning, just replace Bowl with Exhibition. Want to see how easy that is to do?

The Cheez-It Exhibition.

The Famous Idaho Potato Exhibition.

The Quick Lane Exhibition.

Piece of cake!

Then for those other exhibitions that have a little bit of meaning still left in them you just drop the word Bowl from them.

Want to see how that would work?

Here ya go:

The Fiesta.

The Rose.

The ReliaQuest.

Whoops, that last one should definitely be the ReliaQuest Exhibition.

This would be the right thing to do for football fans everywhere and for just the game of football itself because there should be no other bowl game in this world besides the Super Bowl.

Oh, and just cancel the Pro Bowl and whatever they’re doing with that these days.

Patrick Mahomes was not happy at all after the Chiefs missed a field goal late in their loss to the Bengals.

– Mike McDaniel and Tua Tagovailoa had another classic sideline moment yesterday.
