Colin Healy has resigned as Cork City manager with confirmation of his departure expected tonight
Mirror Sport understands the former Ireland international and Rebels midfielder informed the club of his decision after reflecting on Monday’s 5-0 defeat at Bohemians.
Healy was encouraged to stay, but his move to stand aside is not believed to be connected with the Rebels appointment of Liam Buckley as Sporting Director earlier today.
Buckley and Liam Kearney are expected to take charge of the team for Friday’s Premier Division clash with St Pat’s, who parted ways with manager Tim Clancy on Tuesday.
And Clancy could yet be a contender for the Turner's Cross job which will be advertised once Healy's exit is confirmed.
It is understood that Buckley is not in the running to become Cork City's next full-time manager.
Earlier today, Buckley made a dramatic return to football as the Leesider’s new Sporting Director.
The former Sligo Rovers, St Patrick’s Athletic and Shamrock Rovers manager was confirmed in the role by new owner Dermot Usher.
Buckley - a two-time Premier Division winner - will focus on player recruitment, as well as playing a key role in the appointment of a new manager.
Usher, who took ownership of the Leesiders in February, hailed the appointment.
“He has had a long and very successful career in football, and brings a huge amount of knowledge and experience to the role,” he said in a statement before the Healy situation escalated.
“Liam will be focussed on assisting the club in terms of player recruitment, as well as supporting the good work already being done on the football side of things.
“His knowledge and experience will be a big asset to us as we look towards the summer and beyond, so I am very pleased to have him on board.”
Buckley added: “I have had some very good conversations with Dermot and the staff at the club, and am really looking forward to working with everyone.
“Having been promoted back to the Premier Division last season, we are all keen to build on the good work that has already been done and work together to help this club achieve the potential it has.”
