Colin Farrell 'beyond honoured' as he receives first Best Actor Oscar nomination

Colin Farrell has said that he is "grateful" for the support that his latest film has received, following the news that he's received his first Oscar nomination for Best Actor.

The nominations for this year's Academy Awards were announced earlier today (January 24), ahead of the annual awards ceremony being held in Los Angeles on March 12.

Irish talent led the way in the nominations, with recognition in major categories including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress.

Martin McDonagh 's The Banshees Of Inisherin was one of the top films to be recognised, with nine nominations. It was beaten only by Everything Everywhere All At Once with 11.

Colin, 46, and his co-stars Brendan Gleeson, 67, Barry Keoghan, 30, and Kerry Condon, 40, were all nominated for their roles in dark comedy The Banshees Of Inisherin.

Martin, 52, scooped a nod for Best Director for the film, which is set on a remote island off the coast of Ireland.

Colin is nominated for Best Actor, marking his first time in the category. He's up against the likes of Bill Nighy, 73, and Paul Mescal, 26 - both also nominated for the first time!

In a statement to the PA news agency, Colin said in response to the news: "(I'm) just so grateful to the Academy for all the love it's shared with the Banshees' cast and crew."

He further commented over the nomination earlier: "Also, beyond honoured to be lumped together with my fellow nominees. A heartfelt congratulations to all the lads."

It continues his successful awards season run, with him having been nominated for both a Critics Choice and Screen Actors Guild award for his performance in the film.

Among the other nominations for the film are Colin's co-stars Brendan and Barry both being up for Best Supporting Actor. Brendan said: "What an amazing wake-up call.

"I'm so proud and grateful to be part of The Banshees Of Inisherin on a personal and professional level. I'm absolutely thrilled for the whole brilliant cast and everyone at home."

"What a day for the Irish film industry on a world stage. Feels like a huge family outing on the cards. Thank you Academy. Thank you Martin. Thank you all," he further commented.
