Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson reunite in trailer for new film The Banshees of Inisherin

The trailer for Irish black comedy The Banshees of Inisherin has just been released and sees Dubs Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson and Barry Keoghan don western Irish accents.

The film tells the story of life-long friends from a remote Irish island, one of which suddenly decides he's not speaking to the other.

The movie is set in 1923 and sees the two friends, Padraic (Colin Farrell) and Colm (Brendan Gleeson), on opposite sides of the Irish Civil War and how their bitter friendship turns violent.

Padraic's sister Siobhan is played by Kerry Condon while Barry Keoghan plays troubled young islander Dominic. The two attempt to help Padraic repair his relationship with Colm (Brendan Gleeson), but the repeated efforts only cause more tension.

Events then escalate to shock audiences when Colm delivers a desperate ultimatum.

The Banshees of Inisherin is brought to us by Oscar-winning writer-director Martin McDonagh.

He told Vanity Fair: "I wanted to tell a breakup story. This is about things getting inexorably worse from a simple, sad starting point.

"The Irish Civil War was between two sides who, a year before, were on the same side and fighting the British and the British Empire.

"The tragedy of that war was that everyone was close friends—and then they were killing each other."

The Banshees of Inisherin is the first film McDonagh has shot in Ireland.

Production of the film kicked off last October on the islands of Inishmore and Achill off the west coast of Ireland.

This sees Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson reunite on screen after starring together in In Bruges in 2008.

It also sees Colin team up with Barry Keoghan on screen after the younger actor hailed him as "like a big brother to me" when they lived together during production of the flick.

Barry has had huge Hollywood success in the past few years, having starred in Marvel Studios' Eternals alongside big names including Richard Madden and Angelina Jolie.

The film will receive its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September, followed by its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival a few weeks later.

The Banshees Of Inisherin is scheduled to be released in Irish cinemas on Friday, October 21.
