Coleen Rooney unimpressed as Wayne's competitive streak has children in tears

The director of the new Wayne Rooney documentary has revealed he was surprised by the former footballer's competitive streak.

Matt Smith was interviewed by Ranvir Singh on Friday's edition of Lorraine and discussed the new Amazon Prime documentary, which is released today.

"Rooney" provides an unprecedented insight into the former Everton striker's life over the years, both on and off the pitch.

The filmmaker admitted the only thing that caught him off-guard during production was Rooney's ruthless will to win, which prompts unimpressed eye-rolls from his wife, Coleen.

He said: "It just surprised me how competitive Wayne Rooney is and that’s probably because he’s a sportsman. But with the kids, he wouldn’t let them win, to the point where they’re crying and upset, and he just wants to beat them at everything. Coleen was rolling her eyes at him!”

The documentary will show viewers never before seen interviews regarding some of the scandals the Derby County manager has faced during his career.

It is not the first time the documentary maker has worked with famous footballers - and he praised Wayne and Coleen's down-to-earth personalities.

He said: "I’ve worked with a few footballers now and yeah, they’ve all got massive lovely houses, but they are just normal human beings behind it all.

“Coleen and Wayne were lovely, they straight away offered me a cup of tea and brought me a biscuit.

“I asked Wayne a question, ‘Who does all the cooking?’ and Wayne laughed and said, ‘It’s mainly Coleen,’ because Wayne puts too much white pepper in all his food and ruins all the cooking. So they are just normal.”

Rooney is available on Amazon Prime Video from today

Lorraine airs weekdays at 9am on ITV and ITV Hub
