Coleen Rooney has spoken about the strain press leaks had on her and husband Wayne’s marriage after he was caught driving another woman home while three times over the legal limit.
The couple discuss their problems that peaked in 2017 in new three-part Disney+ docuseries about the Wagatha Christie case which saw Coleen in court up against fellow WAG Rebekah Vardy.
The case centred around leaked information from Coleen’s private Instagram account – and the first of which to be made public was when information about her moving in with her parents following Wayne’s drink-driving arrest made its way into The Sun newspaper.
After partying until the early hours the former Manchester United player, 37, was pulled over by police driving Laura Simpson’s car with her in the passenger seat after meeting the then-29-year-old during a boozy night out.
In a frank moment, the Liverpudlian, who was on holiday with their children and her parents at the time of his incident, admitted she was left “heartbroken” by his action and told him “I just can’t carry on with this”.
The mother-of-four added that when the former England footballer drinks and misbehaves he is “not the person I married and the person I want you to be”.
Recalling the difficult period, Coleen said in a clip seen by The Mirror: “I was in the airport and I got a phone call and it was Wayne. I just said, ‘What’s gone on?’ Straight away you don’t get much out of him. You don’t get a lot of information. It was just sickening.
“I’ve had that feeling in my stomach a few times and I would never wish anyone to feel that. You do think, ‘Do I actually know this person?’ when things like that happen. Y’know, ‘You’re not the person I married and the person I want you to be.’
“He just said, ‘I’m sorry, I’m sorry’. And I said well, ‘You can’t be sorry because you know it’s wrong what you’ve done,’ and I just kept saying, ‘You’re stupid, you are just so stupid.’”
In response, Wayne shared: “Of course she wasn’t happy. But if I’m being honest, I can’t even remember speaking to the girl in the bar, never met [her] before in my life.
“So there was never any talk of anything happening or anything was going to happen. You know, I’m driving another girl’s car and she’s in the passenger seat, it doesn’t look great. I know what it was. But I also know what it looked like.”
Coleen then added: “I was just heartbroken. I just said I can’t stay in the house and I went and stayed in my mum’s with the children.”
At this time Coleen posted a message on her Instagram with her kids and the information was leaked, the first of many, despite her deleting the post after a few hours.
Coleen said: “I was a bit gutted because at this point the girl was giving her own story to the press. I actually phoned her up [Laura Simpson] and spoke to her on the phone, I just wanted to hear what she had to say.
“I didn’t tell anyone I was going to call her. If I know someone can talk me out of something that I feel strongly about, that is when I tend to go silent and just do it.
“Me and Wayne were talking it all through. Wayne wanted it to all go back to normal but it wasn’t as easy as that. I was still mad and I just didn’t know what the future was for us as a couple. I said to him ‘I just can’t carry on with this’.
“I know Wayne as a person and I know his qualities and I know his downfalls. Them moments where I think I don’t know him, are when he’s been drinking. And that’s when he is a totally different person.”
The WAG explained that she travelled to Barbados with her children to spend some time apart from Wayne and think things through.
However, more information continued to leak from her social media account, including when she came back and decided to move back in.
Coleen said: “When we came back from Barbados, me and Wayne wasn’t still in a good place, we were trying to work things out. But I took the decision to go back home for the sake of the kids. To make life easier for us as a family.”
To which Wayne added: “It was just a relief to finally see her back home with the children, just being herself. You get married, you make your vows, I want to spend the rest of my life with Coleen.
“To put myself in a position where I can almost throw that away is so silly and stupid of me and it’s not what I want at all.”
When news of the reunion making the papers again, Coleen was left furious and said: “I posted another warning to say please stop. I felt betrayed. It was sly.”
