Cold weather warning issued as icy conditions continue to hit Merseyside

A cold weather warning has been issued by the government for the whole of England as icy conditions continue.

People have woken up to more wintry weather on Merseyside this morning after more snowfall overnight. The cold weather has led to Merseyrail cancellations and motorway closures this Thursday.

A level three cold weather alert, issued by the UK Health Security Agency, is currently in force for the whole of England until 9am on Friday, January 20.

The cold weather alert said: "There is a 90% probability of severe cold weather and icy conditions between 0900 on Wednesday 18 Jan and 0900 on Monday 23 Jan in parts of England. This weather could increase the health risks to vulnerable patients and disrupt the delivery of services. Please refer to the national Cold Weather Plan and your Trust's emergency plan for appropriate preventive action."

According to the latest forecast from the Met Office for Liverpool, temperatures will average at four degrees on Thursday but it will feel like zero degrees. The weather is expected to turn very cold in the north west by tonight, with widespread frost and icy patches.

Sunny spells and clear skies are forecast for Liverpool on Friday when temperatures are forecast to reach highs of six degrees.

Dale Hipkiss, National Network Manager at National Highways, said: “Freezing conditions bring so many hazards such as ice and snow and take every possible step to understand your journey in advance and allow lots of extra time when travelling to prepare for the unexpected.

“It is therefore always important to plan ahead for your journey, listen to the weather forecasts, and if weather conditions become challenging, adjust your driving behaviour and take extra care.

“We have a section of our website dedicated to travelling during the autumn and winter period, as part of our guide to travelling in severe weather. It’s also a good idea for people to check their vehicles, such as tyres, coolant and oil levels, before heading out to reduce the risk of breakdowns.”
