Colby Covington dominates Jorge Masvidal to settle rivalry at UFC 272

Colby Covington earned bragging rights as he outpointed his teammate turned bitter rival Jorge Masvidal in the main event of UFC 272.

The welterweights had a long and storied rivalry which seemed destined to be settled in the cage.

But it was Covington who showed his class over 25 minutes as he smothered his fellow 170lb contender en-route to a unanimous-decision victory.

Masvidal charged towards his rival and faked his signature flying knee as the fight got underway, with Covington wasting no time in taking it to the mat.

Covington spent most of the opening round on Masvidal's back looking to secure a rear-naked choke before a low blow briefly halted the action in the second.

The third round was much the same as Covington took top position and landed some good elbows whilst searching for the neck of Masvidal.

Masvidal's pace started to slow down in the championship rounds as Covington landed a combination after a head kick.

Masvidal did counter with a right hand which briefly dropped his rival but the Miami native was hesitant to follow up and his chance to win the right was gone.

Covington continued to outwrestle his foe for the entirety of the fifth round as before the judges scored the contest 49-46, 50-44 and 50-45 in his favour.

In the co-main event, Rafael Dos Anjos left the face of short-notice replacement Renato Moicano bloodied and bruised after he won a one-sided decision after five rounds.

The fight was close to being stopped several times as the doctor checked on Moicano's swollen eye, but the Brazilian showed extreme toughness to see out the 25 minutes.

Top featherweight prospect Bryce Mitchell, meanwhile, remained unbeaten by out-wrestling the crafty veteran Edson Barboza to win a shutdown decision.
