A COFFEE shop chain has been given the go-ahead by Inverclyde Council to introduce an array of signage at its new location in Greenock.
Costa is set to take on the space which was previously home to the now closed Taco Bell restaurant at the town’s Waterfront Retail Park.
And now the company’s bid for advertisement consent – submitted by its agent Savills – for various illuminated and non-illuminated signs at the building has been granted, subject to conditions.
A report of handling, signed by a case officer and the director of environment and regeneration, shed light on the local authority’s reasoning for giving the application its seal of approval.
It said: “An extensive range of signage is proposed. However, the level is typical of that associated with and generally replacing existing very similar signage at the drive-through premises.
“I do not consider that the scale, positioning or number of signs combine to become an unacceptably dominant feature on the building or within the site overall. I therefore consider the visual impact of the signs to be acceptable.
“The remaining determining factor in the assessment of this application is that of public safety. In this respect, the head of service, roads and transportation seeks a restriction on the level of illumination of the signs.
“I therefore consider it appropriate to impose a condition restricting the level of illumination on any consent granted.
“The signs achieve the minimum headroom height of 2.3 metres. I am therefore satisfied they are acceptable in meeting the requirements of the National Roads Development Guide and pose no adverse impact to public safety.”
In its official decision notice, the council confirmed the proposal was in line with the provisions of the development plan.
