Cody Gakpo offers Liverpool selection hope but new midfield absence sparks concern

New signing Cody Gakpo has been snapped for the first time training with his new team-mates as Liverpool prepare to begin their defence of the FA Cup at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.

The Reds welcome their fellow Premier League side looking to bounce back from Monday's dismal loss at Brentford. Jurgen Klopp put his players through their paces at Kirkby on Thursday afternoon as they continue their preparations for the Anfield clash.

But what could be gleaned from the session?

Hello to Gakpo

With his move from PSV Eindhoven for an initial £37million having now been officially ratified, Gakpo continued to bed himself in with the rest of the Liverpool squad.

The Holland international, who trained with the Reds for the first time on Wednesday, was snapped getting to grips with Darwin Nunez while his 6ft 4ins frame was apparent while playing alongside his new colleagues.

Having sat out the defeat at Brentford and with Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota still injured, Gakpo is poised to feature at the weekend.

Hendo is all go

Another player missing at the Gtech Community Stadium was Jordan Henderson, the skipper absent due to concussion protocols.

Henderson, though, has seemingly now recovered and was able to join in the session fully at the AXA Training Centre.

But there was no sign on the training field of Naby Keita, who made only his fifth appearance of the season when featuring in the second half on Monday.

Duo still waiting

Klopp had been hopeful both Roberto Firmino and James Milner, who picked up injuries last month, may have made the game at Brentford.

But their absence continued on Thursday with neither involved in the session and remaining major doubts for the game on Saturday.

Curtis Jones, who made his long-awaited comeback from injury on Monday, was among those to feature.

Young quartet on standby

Despite the busy treatment room, Klopp is nevertheless likely to rotate heavily at the weekend, which could offer an opening for a number of youngsters.

Stefan Bajcetic, Calvin Ramsay, Ben Doak, Luke Chambers and Bobby Clark were all part of the session at Kirkby.

And the usual goalkeeping crew was joined by Academy hopefuls Harvey Davies and Fabian Mrozek.
