Cody Gakpo makes 'focused' vow amid Liverpool and Manchester United transfer links

Cody Gakpo insists the prospect of a move away from PSV to the Premier League will not distract him as he looks to help guide the Netherlands deeper into the World Cup.

The talented 23-year-old had put himself on the radar of top clubs before the World Cup with his fine form for PSV. But his three goals in four games in Qatar has made everyone take notice, including Liverpool if reports are to be believed.

Manchester United made a late move for Gakpo in the summer transfer window and are expected to revisit that potential deal. But Liverpool's great rivals are set to face fierce competition when the Netherlands star moves on.

But first up for Gakpo and his international team-mates is a showdown with Lionel Messi's Argentina on Friday night. The winners will take their place in the semi-finals of the World Cup. .

"I’m not thinking about that now (his future),” Gakpo said. “I’m just really focused on the tournament, trying to keep performing well and helping the team and hopefully when we become world champion then I can think about that (the future).

“I’m just trying to keep focused and the other players don’t really talk about those things which also helps me in this situation.”

Leeds United came very close to buying Gakpo in the summer but their chances of signing him could well have passed. His Netherlands captain, Virgil van Dijk, believes Gakpo is heading to the top.

The Liverpool centre-back said: "I definitely think he has that next step in him. I definitely feel like it could happen, whether that is in the winter or the summer or next year, time will tell.

“He is a great boy who works hard, very talented and definitely there is more in him. We are so pleased he is doing so well for us. Long may it continue.”
