Cocktail bar subject to licence review 'was in the wrong place'

A city centre cocktail bar which has forfeited its licence was “in the wrong place” according to a councillor who instigated a review of the venue.

Proprietors of the former On Point bar on Victoria Street had been expected to be hauled in front of Liverpool Council’s licensing and gambling sub-committee next week to defend its right to trade alcohol after complaints were made about noise from the venue. That meeting was scheduled after an initial deferral as city centre Cllr Nick Small, who applied for a licence review, was unable to make the crunch hearing.

As reported by the ECHO previously, On Point bosses have spoken with Liverpool Council about its new site 300m away on Eberle Street. The new bar will be known as It’s On Point and will serve alcohol on and off the premises from midday to 1.45am Thursday to Saturday, and midday to 1am Sunday to Wednesday.

It’s On Point now has a licence to open until 2am Thursday to Saturday, and 1am Sunday to Wednesday. The new bar’s application included a request to have live music indoors from midday to midnight every day while recorded music would be played until 2am Thursday to Saturday.

It was awarded the licence in May 2020 and described itself as “Liverpool’s first fully interactive cocktail bar.” Correspondence from Liverpool Council, seen by the ECHO, confirmed On Point’s licence for the Victoria Street location was forfeited on May 23 and as a result, the proposed hearing had been cancelled.

Despite butting heads with the owners over the noise levels, Cllr Small wished the new venture well. He said: “This is positive news for residents living at Old Haymarket.

“I’d been supporting them over several months over noise issues, having received numerous complaints that loud music was being played at the premises after they were permitted to do so under the terms of their licence. I wish On Point well in their new location in Eberle Street.

“They are an inclusive business that does lots of good things. They were just in the wrong location.

“I hope the Victoria Street unit doesn’t remain unoccupied for too long and that a business that is more suited to what is a mixed use area with many people living close by opens there.”
