Cocaine Bear fans ask ‘is this real’ as new film Attack of the Meth Gator teased

Fans of Cocaine Bear have asked “is this real” as new film Attack of the Meth Gator has been teased by its production company. Following the success of the outrageous bear-led comedy-horror, a low-budget film studio famous for its ‘mockbusters’ has announced a new drug-fuelled animal is coming to cinemas later this year.

The dark comedy Cocaine Bear went viral when it was announced last year and has enjoyed a strong opening weekend, currently sitting second in the US box office and third in the UK. Directed by actress-turned-filmmaker Elizabeth Banks, the film revolves around a black bear that goes on a rampage in a United States forest after ingesting a shipment of cocaine.

It is loosely based on the true story of a 175-pound bear that was thought to have died after ingesting $2m worth of cocaine in Georgia’s Chattahoochee National Forest. It stars Keri Russell, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Alden Ehrenreich and the late Ray Liotta.

Now an independent film studio, apparently inspired by Cocaine Bear’s success, has teased the upcoming release of their new film, Attack of the Meth Gator. American studio The Asylum – the company behind the comedy-disaster franchise Sharknado – has announced it will be releasing the ‘mockbuster’ this summer.

Alongside a poster for the film, The Asylum said: “Hold our bear… I mean, beer. Coming for your life this summer.”

The film is said to be loosely based on a request from Tennessee police for people not to flush drugs down the toilet at risk of harming wildlife. A 2019 Facebook post from the state’s Loretto Police Department said: “On a more or less serious note: Folks…please don’t flush your drugs m’kay.

“Ducks, geese, and other fowl frequent our treatment ponds and we shudder to think what one all hyped up on meth would do. Furthermore, if it made it far enough we could create meth-gators in Shoal Creek and the Tennessee River down in North Alabama.”

The Asylum’s Twitter page has been flooded with questions from fans asking if Attack of the Meth Gator is indeed a real film or simply a joke, with the studio confirming it is officially in production. @SeriouslyOMGWTF asked: “Please tell me this real and not a joke!”

@Frostbite_Carno said: “LMAO I LITERALLY MADE THIS EXACT JOKE AND NOW ITS REAL. Now we need the epic Godzilla VS Kong esque crossover. Meth Gator VS Cocaine Bear.”

@Rooflemonger said: “Cinema is finally back.”

@juiceydogg asked: “Is this a movie? I have to see this.”

The Asylum has said Attack of the Meth Gator will hit select cinemas in June.
