Coca-Cola fans fume over new bottle cap change which 'slices hands'

Fans of Coca-Cola have been left fuming after a noticing a recent change to the bottle of their favourite fizzy drinks.

The global soft drinks company recently introduced new attached caps to its 1.5L plastic bottles last year, including Coke, Fanta, Dr Pepper and Sprite.

Rolling out across Scotland and the UK in May last year, the new caps are designed to stay connected to the bottle after opening. The company explained the reason behind the new design is to ensure that the whole packaging can be recycled.

However, despite the good intentions, it looks like fizzy drink fans are not happy with the new caps, with many taking to Twitter to voice their frustrations.

Tagging the soft drinks company in their complaints, some people claim the caps left them with with cuts and slices each time they tried to open the bottle.

One person fumed: "@CocaCola_GB yo, what's with these new lids? They never open properly, and when you finally do get it open it cuts the hell outta your hands each time you open or close the bottle again as the tether becomes really sharp/pointy."

A second annoyed fan wrote: "@CocaCola_GB stop it with the lids fused together I sick of slicing my hand everytime I open my bottle. Just bring the old lid back already."

While a third person tweeted: "@CocaCola_GB Been drinking with you guys all my life, never had an issue. Ever!! But these new bottle caps keep cutting me up. The cap always comes away so you have to tear it away to resell properly which leads to this…."

And a fourth said: "Thanks @CocaCola_GB for these #stupid attached bottle caps that don’t do up properly and cause my Dr Pepper to leak all over my stuff - I can guarantee I’ll be deliberately ripping every bottle cap off and not recycling it in the future, what a stupid idea!"

Another fumed: "@CocaCola_GB any chance you get your bottle tops sorted? It’s been like this for months and there’s no sign of it getting any better."

Despite the negative response from some customers, the new cap design is expected to be rolled out to all plastic bottles from Coca-Cola Great Britain by 2024.

A spokesperson told the Daily Record: "Coca-Cola’s new attached caps are designed to prevent litter, and make collection and recycling easier by keeping all parts of the bottle together.

"Extensive research went into the new design to ensure consumers continue to have a positive experience when enjoying our drinks. When opening and closing the bottle, we advise consumers to not remove the cap from the bottle neck, or twist or bend the tab in a way that could compromise or damage the closure."
