Cobra Kai stars Tanner Buchanan and Mary Mouser confirm relationship after years of speculation

The stars of Cobra Kai – Mary Mouser and Tanner Buchanan – have confirmed their relationship by announcing their engagement following years of fan speculation.

The long-time co-stars initially showed off their rings at Netflix’s event for Cobra Kai, before breaking the news to the rest of the world over a joint post on Instagram on Thursday.

The post, which featured images of Buchanan and Mouser strolling through a hotel lobby while wearing elaborate outfits for the Cobra Kai series finale, read: “We’re so happy to finally share that we’re engaged. This is such a special moment in our lives, the closing of one chapter and celebrating the continuation of another.

“We’re so grateful for the love and support, and though we’re partial to having our private moments, we’re excited to share this check-in to our world.”

At the red-carpet event's party, Buchanan told People that his now-fiancée was “a hundred percent” a ride-or-die companion for him among the cast.

The news came as Cobra Kai released the final part of its sixth and final season on Netflix. The pair play love interests in the show’s second and third seasons.

It is the first time the pair have acknowledged they’re more than friends.

In fact, during a conversation with Interview magazine in 2020, Buchanan shared how awkward it was for his character to be in a relationship with Mouser when they were only acquaintances in real life at the time.

“The romantic scenes are what cause me the most anxiety. You could talk to Mary [Mouser] about this because she and I are such good friends,” he said.

“When we had our first kiss scene in season 2, they were asking us, 'Are you ready?' My heart was pounding, I was shaking. It just feels weird to go to that place, because we’re such good friends.”

On X, co-creator Jon Hurwitz made a joke about the Netflix series' primary objective being their romantic relationship.

“We’re matchmakers first, showrunners second. Our primary goal with Cobra Kai was for Daniel LaRusso’s daughter and Johnny Lawrence’s son to fall in love in real life. Mission accomplished. So happy for them! A perfect couple!”

The couple met while filming the show, which is a continuation of the Karate Kid film series and has been nominated for nine Emmy Awards.

Prior to its 2020 Netflix acquisition, the popular series made its YouTube premiere in 2018.
