Season five of Cobra Kai will be released on Netflix much earlier than was previously anticipated. In a break from tradition, with previous seasons dropping in the New Year, Cobra Kai will return on Friday, September 9.
The series acts as a sequel to the original Karate Kid films, continuing its popularity for the martial arts genre. After beginning on YouTube, Cobra Kai moved to Netflix from season three onwards and has only gained more fans with each passing season.
With the franchise’s debut film establishing teenager Daniel LaRusso as the main character, who is taught karate by Mr Miyagi to defend himself against bully Johnny Lawrence, the spin-off aimed to bring forward their respective lives decades on. Characters old and new will feature in the series’ fifth instalment as they all try to find their inner self.

When is the Cobra Kai season 5 release date?
Cobra Kai season five releases on Netflix on Friday, September 9. This is just over nine months on from the fourth season’s release as the producers keep their tight production schedule.
There will be 10 episodes in total, with the expectation being that they will all be released in one go, allowing for an immediate late-night binge. A fifth run was secured even before the fourth season had aired, with co-creator Jon Hurwitz revealing that the filming was almost entirely finished two months before season four was made available.
Who is in the Cobra Kai season 5 cast?
Reprising their roles from the Karate Kid films will be Ralph Macchio and William Zabka as iconic duo Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence respectively. LaRusso was the main protagonist of the original franchise while Lawrence served as the central antagonist from the 1984 opening film, with both returning in adult form for the inception of Cobra Kai.
Also set to return is Martin Kove as enemy John Kreese who continually antagonises much-loved characters throughout the films and episodes. Terry Silver is another returning character, who was played by Thomas Ian Griffith in The Karate Kid Part III and season four of Cobra Kai, along with Vaness Rubio as Carmen Diaz.
After making an appearance in the season four finale, Karate Kid II star Yuji Okumoto, as Chozen Toguchi, was also confirmed as a surprise cast member. Away from the nostalgia of the Karate Kid films, the younger generation of actors will also be back to continue their own character arcs.
They include Tanner Buchanan (as Robby), Peyton List (Tory), Joe Seo (Kyler), Mary Mouser (Sam), Jacob Bertrand (Eli/Hawk) and Gianni DeCenzo (Demetri). More recent additions are also poised to appear, such as 15-year-old Dallas Dupree Young as Kenny.
