Coatbridge pupils rock out with spectacular school show

Star pupils at St Ambrose High shone as they ended the school year with stellar performances of their much-anticipated school show, We Will Rock You.

They staged three sold-out shows at the Coatbridge school, delighting audiences with their version of the musical featuring songs by Queen.

It even featured on-stage motorbikes loaned for the performances by a former pupil and which proved to be a popular attraction ahead of the curtain going up each night.

More than 50 pupils were involved both on stage and behind the scenes of the spectacular show, and had spent six months rehearsing as a busy Future Fridays activity.

The production had been launched with a spectacular flash mob performance in the school’s busy social area, marking the return of the school’s annual show for the first time in three years due to pandemic restrictions.

Joining the cast were pupils from campus neighbours Buchanan High, who took on the role – while the production raised the grand total of £1000 which is being donated to Coatbridge charity Shining Stars, a theatre group for young people with additional support needs.

With a motorbike being needed as a prop for the show, St Ambrose were supported by former pupil Francine Grimley, founder of the 300-strong Glasgow Ladies Who Ride group and Facebook community for female motorbike enthusiasts.

Twelve riders from the group visited the cast as they took part in their final rehearsals before the show run, while the motorbikes were an enjoyable photo feature for audiences as they arrived for the show each night.

Another former pupil, Monica Taggart, generously gave her time and skills as a make-up artist to ensure the cast members looked the part each night.

Depute head Gerry McCadam said: “The show was absolutely brilliant and the audiences were completely bowled over by how accomplished and skilled every single cast member was.

“It was amazing and pretty spectacular. People loved the music and the acting and singing was brilliant, and it was really good to have the bike props for those scenes.

“Pupils from all year groups were involved in different roles, both on stage and helping with sets and props behind the scenes – they did it even with big commitments like exams and did fantastically well.”

She added: “This was the first school show since 2019 and it was really nice for everyone to be able to do that again.

“Particular thanks go to all the staff who really worked tirelessly in many different roles to get the show up and running, and it was a brilliant success due to the combined effort of the pupils and staff.”
