Coatbridge club hail Scottish Novice Boxing champion after "demolition job" on way to gold

Barn Boxing Club have hailed medal winner Fred Hannaway after his win at the Scottish Novice Championship.

Opponent Jamie Hurshaw withdrew from the fight and granted Hannaway the win after Barn’s boxer steamrolled his way into the 2005 (Y05 80kg) bout with some high-quality performances.

Coach Martyn Hetherston says it was no surprise to see his fighter’s opponent pull out of the reckoning after a number of convincing displays ahead of the meeting.

He said: “It was different class from Fred and it’s great news. I am not surprised. He is a very good boy and he put in some unbelievable performances.

“It was a magnificent day. The coaches did a wonderful job. I’m not surprised the other boy wasn’t able to show up after the first demolition job.”

There were other Barn boxers in action at the championship - including promising fighter Kieran Bergin. While Hetherston believes they could have had more champions, he is content with how things panned out at Ravenscraig.

With it being a debut event for many, the experience picked up by them is perhaps the most important thing.

Hetherston added: “All in all, the fighters made us proud as a lot of them were making their debuts, apart from Kieran Bergin, who had fought at the Western Districts.

“The rest of them were outstanding. We are over the moon. They’re all winners the minute they walk through the ropes into the ring.

“They did the Barn proud as that was a big ask. You go over to it and there are around 500 or 600 people there, and three rings. You are taking young boys in for their debuts.

“It’s not like a homeshow where you have four or five of your own boys in a dressing room. You have hundreds all over the place getting prepared, skipping, shadow boxing.

“It was quite daunting for them but they did well and we got the champion we were looking for. We should have had more but it is good experience for them.”
