Coastguard helps rescue drivers after 40 motors become stranded in Shetland snow

Around 40 motors were rescued by the coastguard and cops after they became stranded in Shetland.

HM Coastguard for Shetland and Orkney were alerted to the motorists stuck in the snow on Monday, December 12, in the Kames and Tresta areas. Alongside cops they used off-road vehicles to reach them and cleared the snow blocking all the drivers.

Despite some drivers being stranded for over 12 hours it is understood all the cars made it out and no injuries were reported.

A spokesperson for HM Coastguard Shetland and Orkney said: "Coastguard Rescue teams from Sumburgh, Lerwick, Walls, Hillswick & Mid Yell were all tasked yesterday evening to support Police Scotland due to the adverse weather conditions.

"Rescue teams were tasked to multiple reports of vehicles off road and concerns for their occupants.

"The teams were able to use their 4x4’s to reach stranded motorists and check on their welfare, taking them to a place of safety if necessary.

"Working alongside SIC gritting crews, teams were able to assist clearing a blockage of approximately 40 cars near to tresta, who were unable to move due the road conditions."

Locals thanked the rescuers on Facebook last night.

One man said: "Amazing job last night on The Kames, thanks for checking on myself and passengers who were actually in good spirits, some who had been travelling since 6am from the Mainland, really appreciated, keep up the great work."

A woman replied: "Thank you so much to the Coastguard and Gritter team who helped us out in Tresta last night! Terrible conditions and the guys on the scene did an amazing job!"

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for snow and ice in Shetland, the Highlands and some parts of the Scottish Borders that is due to expire tomorrow, December 15.
