Coastguard helicopter and lifeboats out in search for person in River Mersey

Emergency services are searching the River Mersey after reports of a person in the water.

The coastguard confirmed they were called to the waterfront after reports of a person in the River Mersey, close to New Brighton at around 10.30pm on Tuesday, July 19. Working with the RNLI, Merseyside police and the fire and rescue service , the Coastguard has been leading the search operation.

Hoylake hovercraft and lifeboats from both New Brighton and Hoylake have been involved in the search, alongside a Coastguard helicopter. The search continues for the person in the water.

A spokesperson for HM Coastguard said: "Shortly after 10:30 last night HM Coastguard responded to reports of a person in the water close to New Brighton. New Brighton Crosby and Dee coastguard rescue teams, and Mersey Police and Fire and Rescue Service have been sent to search the area

"Hoylake Hovercraft, the New Brighton Lifeboat, Hoylake RNLI lifeboat, the coastguard rescue helicopter from Caernarfon and coastguard fixed wing aircraft from Doncaster have also been sent to help. The search is still ongoing."

A spokesperson for Merseyside police said they are assisting the coastguard with the incident, while the fire service said that they were stood down at 2am. A spokesperson said: "Two fire engines were sent to the scene, as well as the search and rescue appliance and our rescue boat, Marine Fire One.

"Merseyside fire and rescue service's land-based crews assisted with a search of the banks of the estuary from Leasowe Bay to Harrison Drive whilst Marine Fire One assisted the RNLI and Coastguard with searches of the water."
