Coast Guard crews are currently engaged in a search operation for a missing individual in the waters off Staten Island following a tragic boating incident that occurred on Sunday. The incident resulted in the capsizing of a boat, leading to the loss of at least three lives, as confirmed by officials.
The emergency response was initiated around noon on Sunday after Coast Guard Sector New York received a distress call from New York City 911 operators reporting a vessel in distress near Breezy Point, Queens. In collaboration with New York police and fire units, as well as New Jersey State Police, Coast Guard crews swiftly responded to the scene and successfully rescued five individuals from the water. The rescued individuals were promptly transported to local hospitals for medical attention.
Tragically, three of the rescued individuals were pronounced dead, according to NYPD Detective Arthur Tsui. Another individual remained in critical condition as of Sunday afternoon, while the fifth person was reported to be in stable condition. The search efforts are ongoing, with Coast Guard crews utilizing both air and boat resources to locate the missing person.
Notably, the water temperatures in the area were recorded to be around 36 degrees early Monday, as per NOAA data. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the boating incident is currently underway, as confirmed by the NYPD detective. The authorities are working diligently to gather information and determine the factors that led to the tragic capsizing of the boat.
