Co Tyrone A Level art student makes dress from Covid facemasks

An A Level art student from Co Tyrone passed with flying colours after making a dress out of facemasks used during the Covid 19 pandemic.

Morgan McDaid from Strabane was a student at Holy Cross College and after receiving an A in art and design she is now heading on to a foundation degree in the subject to follow her passion.

But it was her final A Level project which caught the eye, using facemasks that she spray painted blue and pink to signify a moment in time during the pandemic.

The talented artist told MyTyrone the dress was inspired by a trip to New York where she saw other artwork driven by sustainability.

“I got the idea in December when I went on a trip to New York when I saw an art exhibition which focused on waste,” Morgan said.

“I started it in March and it was a long process but I managed to get it finished in May.

“It was all worth it though when I got my final results to say I had got an A, I can’t wait to go on to do my foundation degree now.

“The facemasks were a great way of reminding us of the difficult time we all went through with the pandemic and that we have come through it now.”

Morgan says the theme given to her was ‘boundaries’ and the mixed colours were supposed to represent new ideas around gender and identity.

“I saw a lot of gender fluid designs so I wanted something which gave off a neutral vibe which I think it does.

“There is a big drive in fashion now to be sustainable so I really wanted to capture that. I’m just so glad the examiners liked it!”
