Co-op announces update to product packaging following M&S, Asda and Sainsburys

The Co-op has become the latest supermarket to announce they’ve joined a campaign that will educate shoppers about the symptoms of one of the UKs deadliest cancers. They’ve followed in the footsteps of M&S, Asda, Aldi, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose, who joined Bowel Cancer’s #GetOnARoll campaign in recent weeks.

The campaign, in collaboration with Marks and Spencer, has seen supermarkets promise to update their toilet roll packaging to display signs and symptoms of the disease in a bid to raise awareness.

The late Dame Deborah James also raised the profile of the campaign before she lost her battle with bowel cancer in June. But it serves to help millions of people across the UK know how to spot the signs of bowel cancer and encourage them to contact their GP if they experience any symptoms.

Co-op is one of the final retailers to pledge support to the campaign, taking to Twitter to announce they were going to make the important update to their own brand toilet roll packaging.

They wrote: “Thank you to everyone who asked us to add the symptoms of bowel cancer to our loo roll packaging. We’re really happy to announce that we've joined up with @bowelcanceruk to make this happen and to help save lives #GetOnARoll.”

The updated own-brand loo rolls are expected to be seen on shelves later this year, along with other supermarkets and toilet roll brand Andrex. The idea originated from M&S employee Cara Hoofe, who was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2016. She submitted the idea via the retailer's CEO suggestion scheme, Straight to Stuart, and kickstarted a movement that can help potentially save lives.

Responding to Co-op getting on board, Bowel Cancer UK wrote: “So glad to be working together and raising this vital awareness.” While Bolton Cancer Voices added: “Well done. Thank you!”

It does leave only one supermarket yet to pledge their support to the campaign, with Bowel Cancer UK encouraging shoppers to tweet Lidl to get involved.
