Co Fermanagh school offering free breakfast to pupils amid cost of living crisis

A secondary school in Co Fermanagh has been offering pupils free breakfast every morning as they seek to help families during the cost of living crisis.

St Kevin’s in Lisnaskea has been running the breakfast club every morning since the beginning of the new term, with plenty of pupils taking up the offer.

School principal Gary Kelly says it is a small gesture at a difficult time for many families due to the rising cost of living.

“We do a different menu every week for them, we’ll have tea and toast every day and then we’ll maybe have scones one week or pancakes the next week,” Gary told MyFermanagh.

“We rotate it around every week to give a wee bit of variety to it and there are about 50 to 60 students every day who would make use of it.

“The idea of it is twofold, a lot of our students would travel to school by bus and kids being kids sometimes they just run out to the bus and miss their breakfast.

“We do realise as well that families are finding it tough at the minute as well.”

The Lisnaskea principal added it was important for students to be well fed in the mornings in order to be able to learn properly.

“A lot of the time maybe some students will miss breakfast at home and end up buying something at the shop and spending a couple of pound in the morning on that,” he said.

“We thought that would help everybody who wants it and set them up for the day and keep them going until lunchtime.

“Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and if your energy levels aren’t high in the morning you can struggle with your learning.

“Obviously it is a costly thing for the school but we have managed to subsidise it through grants and we feel like it’s an important thing to do.”
