Co Down teen meets Lando Norris and Fernando Alonso in 'dream' F1 trip

A Co Down teenager met star drivers including Lando Norris, George Russell and Fernando Alonso during a 'dream' Formula One trip.

Yasmin Janahi recently travelled to Bahrain for a three-day test session after winning the DHL Motorsports F1 Commentator Challenge.

The 19-year-old beat entries from across the world to book her ticket to Bahrain International Circuit last month.

During her trip, she got to commentate on Sky Sports and F1 TV and mingle with other key names including Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner.

"It was amazing. A once in a lifetime experience," beamed Yasmin.

"I was away for two days, although it felt like I was away forever. I arrived on the Friday and spent two days at the track.

"I got a tour on day one and met some of the drivers, and saw how all the fancy people who get VIP paddock passes live.

"On the second day I did an interview with F1 TV broadcaster Laura Winter, and then I commentated live on the test session. It was really nerve-racking at the start.

"I was commentating live for Sky Sports and F1 TV, and I was in the room with people who do this day in, day out including Jolyon Palmer. But I grew into it and became more comfortable."

One of the highlights for Yasmin was getting to meet several F1 stars.

"I got to meet a lot of the drivers including Lando Norris, Oscar Piastri, Carlos Sainz, Fernando Alonso, Alex Albon, Yuki Tsunoda and others.

"I also chatted to George Russell briefly. And I managed to get a lot of photos with them.

"They were all really supportive and down to earth. I also talked to Christian Horner about my actual video. He told me it was a great opportunity for me.

"Oscar Piastri wished me luck as well, which was nice. And because it was a test session the drivers were more relaxed."

Yasmin added: "Just being around a F1 circuit was great, and I felt like royalty. I got to walk the pit lane and I saw the cars up close.

"I also got to sit on the pit wall with Pat Symonds (F1 Chief Technical Officer) who showed me some of the controls. That was really cool.

"And seeing the cars up close was brilliant. Watching Formula One on TV, you don't really see how fast the cars go. And they are so loud.

"So you get to fully appreciate what these cars can do. I don't know how they even keep control of the car going around bends."

Yasmin hopes her F1 experience is a sign of things to come in the future.

She admits her long-term dream would be to secure a job in F1 journalism or television presenting.

"This has only whetted my appetite. I would love to be a F1 presenter or journalist," she said.

"And this has given me the drive to continue with that. When I came out of the commentary booth in Bahrain I got speaking to Sky TV's Ted Kravitz who said he actually listened to my commentary.

"He said I had potential, which was lovely of him. So hopefully this is only the start for me. Will Buxton and Laura Winter also gave me some advice which I appreciated.

"It was a brilliant experience from start to finish. And for a young girl from County Down getting to travel to Bahrain for something like that, it is a dream."
