Clydebank childcare worker struck off for headbutting 'challenging' child and breaking their nose

A social services worker in Clydebank has been banned from working in the profession after breaking a child's nose by headbutting them and throwing them to the ground.

Gregory Paul was working as a Residential Childcare Worker in February 2021 when a 'physically abusive' incident unfolded between him and a child in his care.

In response to being headbutted by the child displaying 'heightened behaviour', he retaliated by headbutting them back. He then picked the young person up by the top of their legs and forcefully threw them onto the ground.

The child suffered a broken nose as a result.

Paul was brought before the Scottish Social Services Council for his behaviour where it was found that his actions amounted to 'physical abuse'.

A report by the SSSC outlines: "Although challenging situations can be difficult to manage, this behaviour is physical abuse and falls below the standards expected of social service workers. These actions caused or contributed to the service user sustaining a significant injury, namely a broken nose.

"Responding to challenging behaviour in this manner raises significant concerns about your underlying values and violates fundamental tenant of the profession. This behaviour raises serious questions about your suitability to work in social services.

"Your actions raise significant concerns regarding your underlying values and attitude. You have demonstrated a disregard and contempt for the rights and dignity of a young person in your care."

Although Paul demonstrated 'remorse and regret' in relation to his behaviour, it was concluded that he displayed a 'serious loss of self-control' and that his behaviour was 'fundamentally incompatible with continuing professional registration'.

It was determined that he should be struck off from the profession and removed from the register.
