Club chief makes 'excellent candidates' claim amid links to Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper

Brighton and Hove Albion looked at “a range of excellent” candidates during their search for a new manager, amid links to Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper.

The Welshman is understood to have admirers at the Amex Stadium and was said to be on the shortlist to replace Graham Potter, following his departure to Chelsea. But any speculation was put to bed on Sunday, when the Seagulls appointed Roberto De Zerbi as their new boss.

Mainz’ Bo Svensson and Bodø/Glimt chief Kjetil Knutsen were also among those reportedly in contention for the job. But Brighton chief executive Paul Barner, who is also deputy chairman, says De Zerbi was the only one the club held talks with.

He told the official website: “We looked at a range of excellent candidates, but Roberto was our number one choice from the start and the only person we spoke to.

“It’s no secret our chairman is constantly monitoring potential coaches, both here in our domestic leagues, throughout Europe and across the world as part of our succession planning work.

“We feel Roberto is the ideal cultural and technical fit for Brighton & Hove Albion, and the right person to continue the club’s progress and work with this outstanding group of players.”

Last week, Cooper dismissed speculation linking him with Brighton. Prior to Friday night’s defeat to Fulham, he said: “I haven't really thought about that, there is certainly no truth in it.

"Everyone who knows me knows what working for Nottingham Forest means to me and how important it is, especially after losing a couple of games. It matters more to me. That is the only thing on my mind, the job I am doing here on a daily basis. It is consuming enough as it is.

“But I love my time here. I love working with the players, I love the staff, I love the city, so that is the only thing on my mind.”

Brighton's appointment comes as it is suggested Forest are keen to tie Cooper to a new deal as they would receive little compensation should any other club look to poach him. On Wednesday, he will mark one year at the City Ground, leaving him with 12 months remaining on his contract.
