Cloud over veteran NSW Labor MP's future

A long-serving NSW MP could be dumped from Labor's upper house ticket when the party's right faction holds a crucial preselection meeting.

There are reports suggesting former Labor leader in the Legislative Council Adam Searle could be on the way out, as rank-and-file members meet to preselect election candidates for the upper house at the 2023 election.

Reports Mr Searle will miss out on a winnable spot were dismissed as "hearsay" by a NSW Labor spokesperson on Thursday.

The upper house positions will be voted on by the right faction of NSW Labor in a meeting at the party's Sydney headquarters on Thursday evening.

The left faction has already preselected its candidates, with Labor's final ballot to be determined at the NSW party's annual conference next month.

Mr Searle has been in the upper house for more than 11 years and was aligned with former Labor leader Jodi McKay, who was ousted by Chris Minns just over a year ago.

Mr Minns and Mr Searle are understood not to be close, although not at odds with each other.

Another upper house MP, Walt Secord, confirmed last month he would not re-contest his position, leaving another vacancy.

Mr Secord stepped down from his opposition portfolios of police, counter-terrorism, the arts and the North Coast region of NSW after allegations of bullying were levelled at him following the publication of a report into harassment and bullying in the NSW parliament.

Mr Secord apologised at the time, saying he could be too blunt in a fast-paced work environment.
