Clothing stylist explains why you should never hang your knitted jumpers

A fashion stylist has shared her industry secrets for storing fancy clothes, warning that one mistake can ruin certain garments.

Hanging pieces in your wardrobe is a great way to see what you have and quickly pair outfits together for the day. But Veronika, also known as @Whatverawears, took to her TikTok profile to warn her 770,000 followers against hanging knitwear and that any jumpers should be folded and shelved only.

Filming from her meticulously organised walk-in wardrobe, the expert revealed the things she learned about caring for clothes by "working in luxury retail."

"Knitwear should never be hanged, instead always fold them to keep their shape," she explained. Some viewers were surprised to learn the "correct way" to store the clothes, with one asking for more information.

One comment read: "Why not hang knitwear? Does it stretch it or something?" To which the fashion expert replied: "It does, it will loose it’s original shape!"

The same goes for jumpers made of heavier cotton materials, as they can lose their shape at the shoulders when hung for too long.

Another fan admitted: "I thought it would be better than folding them so i hang them but now i know its bad."

The professional shared other industry secrets to keep your other clothes in great condition. For anyone who uses clip hangers to store trousers and skirts, she recommends placing material between the clasps and the clothing to prevent damage.

"When hanging leather and delicate materials on clip hangers, always use a piece of thick material to protect them."

For larger pieces like dresses, Veronika says you should store them in fabric bags over plastic, as it is a more breathable material and will keep them in the best condition.

She added that black clothes and jeans should always be washed inside out. This prevents fading and will keep their colour for longer. Finally, place scented wardrobe bags in with your clothing to keep them smelling fresh and to absorb moisture.

Viewers were quick to praise the "useful!" industry advice, with some even asking for more. One viewer wrote: "Can this become a series? This is really useful."
