Clothes retailer M&Co to close all of its stores

A high street clothes chain is to close all of its 170 stores, with 2,000 staff losing their jobs, according to reports. M&Co appointed administrators at the end of last year, for the second time after it first collapsed in 2020.

The chain, which was formerly known as Mackays, is based in Scotland and has stores across the UK. According to the BBC, stores will begin closing in the spring.

M&Co was bought out of administration by AK Retail Holdings. However, the deal did not include stores themselves - they will close by Easter.

Stores across the UK have been posting on their Facebook pages to announce the closures.

The posts read: "Unfortunately we haven't received the news we would have hoped for during our administration period, and would like to share this news with you. As we haven't received any funded, deliverable offers that would result in the transfer of the company's stores or staff to a potential buyer, this means that all of our stores will close."

Mackays dates back to 1834, when it was established as a pawnbrokers. It made the switch the clothing sales in 1953, before rebranding as M&Co in 2005.

It fell into administration in 2020, when 47 stores closed and 380 staff lost their jobs. Its assets were immediately bought back by the family that built the business originally. AK Retail Holdings also owns Yours Clothing.
