Clinical Son Heung-min has special skill and Antonio Conte is making most of it at Tottenham

After 87 minutes of football against West Ham United over the course of the weekend, Son-Heung-min was clean through on goal after being fed by his attacking teammate, Harry Kane.

The South Korean was the only player to enter the final third at one stage as he approached Lukasz Fabianski to engage in a one-on-one battle. Despite the quality and experience of the Polish goalkeeper, everybody knew Son would find the net.

Over the years, the 29 years-old has developed a reputation for ruthless efficiency in front of goal. Son is known for taking his chances when he's presented with opportunities to score, and the numbers can prove that he's one of the world's best at doing exactly that.

Expected Goals (xG) can be applied in order to grasp the impressive finishing exhibited by the Tottenham Hotspur forward.

Dating back to 2014, he's accumulated a total of 485 shots in the Bundesliga and Premier League. According to xG, those shots should have been worth roughly 62 goals, yet Son has managed to score 87 times.

He's overperformed xG by a considerable amount - 25 goals to be exact - which suggests that he's an above average finisher in comparison to the average player.

His consistent overperformance above xG is captured by the graphic below, which excludes penalties and shots from set-pieces. Blue suggests that he's scoring more than expected, white is closer to normal performance and red suggests underperformance. For context, Son's finishing has been visualised alongside Kane's since 2014.

Son's finishing level can be shown by the fact he's consistently overperformed Expected Goals dating back to 2014 (@placeholder2004)

Kane's finishing is undeniably strong but in comparison to Son, the England captain has suffered from a series of barren runs. Around 2016 and 2018, Kane drifted below expectation, and the same can be said for this season, as shown by the red in 2022.

Son has largely avoided any underperformance since emerging as a prospect at Bayer Leverkusen. Whether he's scoring with his left or his right foot, he's an expert at converting shots into goals for Spurs.

In fact, 38% of the goals that Son has bagged over the period in question have been scored with his weaker foot, which is quite remarkable.

As Antonio Conte continues to construct his new-look Spurs outfit, he can rest assured that one of Europe's most clinical finishers is available to him.
