Climber who helped Helen Skelton on Countryfile sadly passes away

A well known climber who helped presenter Helen Skelton on Countryfile has sadly died, the show has revealed. Known as ‘Climber Pete’, he appeared with the star in 2020 as they got to grips with the Peak District.

Helen and Pete seemed to really get on with her calling him ‘a joy’ and the announcement was made on this week’s show. The 2020 section aired again on Sunday’s show - and in it Helen and Pete took to the hills, the Sun reported.

She introduced Pete by telling viewers: “When he’s not in his favourite chair at the pub, local climbing legend Pete can be found dangling from rocks like these.”

The section showed Helen taking on a challenging section of rock. She told Pete: “As you get up, it gets slightly easier. It’s more of a challenge at the bottom.”

“I thought you did good there, that was good,” Pete replied. The host went on to ask: “Do I qualify for Tuesday club?” to which Pete confirmed: “Yes you do.”

Joining Pete and his friends Olly and Crystal, the group climbed the mountains together, with Helen admitting she struggled to begin with. He then encouraged her telling her she “did good”.

“How do you celebrate, how do you warm up?” she then asked him. Naturally, he had a traditional English response - to go for a pint at his pub, The Angler’s Rest.

At the end of the segment, which aired again on Sunday night’s episode of the BBC2 favourite, Helen declared Pete “a joy” and shared a hug with him. However, the repeated moment was tinged with sadness as this week’s special – which aptly focused on climbing gear and hiking in intense temperatures – cut back to this week’s host, Ellie Harrison who said: “Sadly, since filming, Pete has passed away. But his rock climbing adventures continue to inspire.”
