Germany's busiest airport, Frankfurt Airport, experienced disruptions on Thursday as environmental activists staged protests to raise awareness about climate change. Over 100 flights were canceled due to safety concerns after activists breached security fences, prompting a response from authorities. While all runways were operational by 7:50 a.m. local time, further disruptions are anticipated throughout the day.
Environmental groups have announced plans to target airports across Europe this summer to emphasize the connection between fossil fuels, air travel, and climate change. They are advocating for global governments to cease fossil fuel extraction and burning by 2030.
Despite efforts to combat the climate crisis, investments in oil and gas are projected to rise by 7% this year, as per the International Energy Agency. Flying is recognized as a carbon-intensive activity, yet the aviation industry is expected to expand in the coming years.
The Last Generation group orchestrated the Frankfurt demonstration, where protesters breached the perimeter fence and made their way towards the runways using various means of transportation. This incident followed a similar disruption at Cologne-Bonn Airport the day before.
Protests also took place in other European countries, including Finland, Norway, Switzerland, and Spain. While some demonstrations caused minor disruptions, others, like the one planned at Heathrow Airport in London, were prevented by law enforcement.
In response to these incidents, the German Cabinet approved legislation to impose stricter penalties on individuals who breach airport perimeters. The proposed bill includes potential prison sentences for those who intrude on airside areas, endanger civil aviation, or facilitate such actions.
These protests underscore the growing concern over climate change and the urgent need for collective action to address its impact on the environment and society.
