An independent bakery and general store in Clifton Village has made the "difficult decision" to close at the end of this month, citing the impact of the cost of living crisis. Sunday General has said it will be running a closing down sale over the next few weeks, with its last day of trading set to be January 29 or until stocks last.
The stunning store stocks a distinctive range of store cupboard items and fresh produce alongside bread, pastries, homeware, and beauty products. On its Instagram page, Sunday General confirmed that it will still be offering fresh bread and pastries every day during its final few weeks, as well as a closing down sale "with great discounts on loads of your favourite homeware, beauty and food products".
Having opened during the second covid lockdown in the autumn of 2020, Sunday General hoped to encourage more people to shop locally. On its website, the company says it believes in "slow living, neighbourhood shopping and supporting small suppliers and producers who have a purpose bigger than profit".

Before becoming Sunday General, the prime corner location on Boyce's Avenue was occupied for six years by Papersmiths, a stationery and paper shop that closed its doors in August 2020. At the time, a sign on the retailer’s door said it had been “a rough ride lately” and it was time to “turn off the lights for good”.
The full post shared by Sunday General said: "Like so many small businesses affected by the cost of living crisis, we’ve had to make the difficult decision to close our doors. We’ve absolutely loved being a part of the Clifton Village community and are super grateful for all the lovely customers and suppliers we’ve had the pleasure of meeting and working with.
"We’ll be running a ‘closing down sale’ from today (Monday the 16th) with great discounts on loads of your favourite homeware, beauty and food products. Our last day of trade will be the 29th of January (unless everything’s gone before then), so please swing by and see us one last time over the next two weeks."
