Clifton café and garage could be torn down to make way for new funeral home for Nottingham business

A vacant café and garage could be torn down as a Nottingham business looks to build a new funeral home. The empty garage and former Clifton Café and Cob Shop on Southchurch Drive, Clifton, could be replaced by a funeral home with additional commercial space and six flats, if new plans are approved by Nottingham City Council.

The proposal has been put forward by family-run funeral service A.W. Lymn, which is looking to relocate from its current branch at Chaworth House on Varney Road, Clifton. The new location, which is hoped to open in 2024 and act as a "more visible face to the community", will be run by funeral director Joanna Widdowson.

On the funeral home plans, Ms Widdowson said the proposal for a “bigger and better branch" would benefit families and staff, with the location next to the tramline and onsite parking providing easier access. The new branch would be built to offer an "even better service" with more space, measuring 169.1 sqm compared to the current home's 65 sqm.

A waiting room would be built next to the chapel to allow more privacy and ease for the bereaved. There would also be a cold room, which protects dead bodies from decomposition.

A.W. Lymn is headquartered in Sneinton, Nottingham and operates 27 funeral homes across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. Pete Clarson, commercial director at A.W. Lymn, added: “It is crucial that we are a visible, easily accessible face within the community.

"After serving the people of Clifton since 1990, we feel now is the right time to move to a more spacious branch and are investing in a purpose-built funeral home right in the heart of Clifton, with a residential and commercial offering.” The planning application is pending consideration by Nottingham City Council.
