Clever freezer hack could save on electricity bill this winter

A TikToker has shared an ingenious way to save money on electrify bills with one simple trick to help fight the cost of living crisis.

Fridges washing machines, tumble dryers, kettles and "vampire devices" are all known to add substantial sums to electricity bills. However, a build-up of frost in your freezer could be adding to already sky-high electricity bills.

Frost is formed in a freezer warm air meets cold air when the door is opened and forms water which freezes. The ice in the freezer acts as an insulator to the warm air that enters when you open the door and means the appliance has to work harder to cool the temperature.

To defrost your freezer, empty the appliance and allow the frost to melt away or use hot water to melt it quicker. It is also advisable to fill your freezer as much as possible so there is less air to cool when the door is opened.

TikToker @klairedelysoffical shared the tip on her channel which she says can save €30 or €40 a year. She said: "As you can see behind me, I have got the door of my freezer open.

"The reason I am doing that is when you have got a build up of ice on the freezer, it is going to be using a lot more electricity. Normally, that wouldn't make that much of a difference but currently it makes a huge difference."

She added: "Everything you can do to mean that your energy bill doesn't go through the roof - I don't know about you but I am certainly doing it. We use hardly any electricity."

Another TikToker shared a top tip to dry your clothes quickly without a tumble dryer.
