Cleo Smith's alleged abductor Terence Kelly due back in court amid police officer assault charge

The man accused of abducting four-year-old Cleo Smith is due back in court today in the WA town of Carnarvon and will, for the first time, also face a charge of assaulting a police officer.

It will be the third court appearance by Terence Darrell Kelly, who is expected to again appear via video link from Casuarina maximum security prison in Perth.

He was transferred to the facility in the days after he was arrested and charged with stealing Cleo from her family's tent at the Quobba Blowholes campsite, north-east of Carnarvon, in the early hours of October 16.

Her disappearance sparked a massive land, air and sea search as well as one of the most extensive investigations in WA history.

Detectives found the little girl 18 days later playing with toys in a locked room of Mr Kelly's house, which was only minutes away from her family's home.

Police later released audio of the moment Cleo was found and body cam footage of her being taken out of the house as she was told she would be taken to see her parents.

Around the same time the four-year-old was found, Mr Kelly was arrested when police pulled over a car in the town, with officers taking him to Carnarvon police station.

During his two days in the lock-up, he was also taken by ambulance to hospital for treatment for what were described at the time as self-inflicted injuries.

Mr Kelly has so far not been required to enter a plea to the child stealing charge.
