Clement explains why he DIDN’T speak to Nick Walsh after Rangers red card

Rangers manager Philippe Clement has explained why he didn't speak to referee Nick Walsh after Mohamed Diomande's sending-off against Dundee United on Sunday.

The midfielder was shown a red card in the dying embers of the game after an alleged slap on United central defender Kevin Holt.

After ordering Diomande off, whistler Walsh was then asked to go and review the incident on the pitchside VAR monitor but stuck to his guns and the 23-year-old was forced to head up the tunnel early.

Post-match, Clement slammed the decision, admitting he didn't understand it and confirming his club will appeal the red card.

The Belgian has also explained why he refused to speak to Walsh immediately after full-time. Asked if he caught up with the referee, Clement said: "No, I didn't do, because I know how these things go.

"He's in the emotions, I'm in the emotions, so that's not a good moment.

"It's a good thing we have the open communication with the referee department, and we're going to appeal that, and then we're going to see what they think about it, and also to ask what the VAR said. It's clear they bring him to the screen, so they don't agree with the decision. That's clear."

While Clement disagrees with Diomande's red card, it's understood referee Walsh believed the Ivorian reacted in a deliberate manner, with a swing of the arm said to be not negligible in his mind.

It remains to be seen what the outcome of the controversy will be, with Diomande currently suspended for Rangers' home game against Ross County on Sunday.
