Clearwater, a city located about 30 miles west of Tampa, faced a challenging situation overnight as Hurricane Milton caused severe flooding in an apartment complex. Multiple residents found themselves trapped inside their apartments, prompting several calls to 911 for help.
According to Clearwater police, as many as 18 residents reported being trapped due to the rising floodwaters. The situation was dire, with water levels reaching chest-deep at one point, making it difficult for residents to evacuate on their own.
Rescue efforts were quickly mobilized, with water rescues underway as early as 7 a.m. Thursday. Clearwater Police Department's Public Information Officer, Rob Shaw, confirmed that rescue crews were using inflatable boats and high-water vehicles to navigate through the waist-deep water in the complex.
Video footage captured the dramatic scenes of residents being loaded onto boats in near darkness, highlighting the urgency of the situation. Shaw emphasized the importance of staying home and staying safe, as the flooding was extensive and potentially hazardous.
As rescue teams continued to go door to door to check on residents, it became evident that the flooding was widespread within the apartment complex. The challenging conditions posed a significant obstacle for both residents and emergency responders alike.
Despite the difficulties faced by both residents and rescue crews, the collaborative efforts aimed to ensure the safety and well-being of those affected by the flooding. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of natural disasters and the importance of preparedness and swift response in such situations.
