Cleaning guru's cheap 65p remedy for yellow pillow staining lifts odours too

When you change your bedsheets, you might have noticed that your pillows have some yellow stains on them that are usually covered up by your pillowcases.

The stains are caused by sweat and saliva, and since the weather has been so warm lately, many of us have been sweating more during the night and therefore causing more stains to appear on our pillows.

But according to one cleaning expert, there is one thing you can do, which involves using a simple kitchen ingredient that most of us already own - and it will even help to lift odours from your pillows at the same time.

Jessica Hanley, founder of Piglet in Bed, said baking soda can be used to freshen pillows and help to get rid of both yellow stains and unpleasant odours and should be added to your washing machine when you wash your pillows.

She also said we should all be washing our pillows between three and four times a year, but in the summer months, you should freshen your pillows in between washes by sprinkling baking soda on them.

"Bicarbonate of soda is great for absorbing moisture and reduces odours, which makes it perfect for sweaty pillows," Jessica said, "All you need to do is sprinkle an even amount across your pillows and leave to sit for a couple of hours.

"After waiting, use a handheld hoover with a small nozzle to hoover your pillow clean, making sure to remove all bicarb residue."

Baking soda costs just 65p from Tesco, and is also the same price from Asda.

Meanwhile, Jessica also said you can prevent yellow stains from appearing on your pillow by using protectors that will keep your pillows safe from stains and can be easily washed.

And while the weather is nice, you can also hang your pillows out on your washing line to aerate in the breeze, which will help to dry up any moisture and can reduce bad odours.

The sun's UV rays can actually help to reduce bacteria which is great, as a sweat-covered pillow can be a breeding ground for bacteria. However, this trick isn't ideal for hay fever sufferers, as having your pillows outside could cause pollen to stick to them.
