Cleaning expert shares easy method for getting stubborn sunscreen stains out of clothes

Many of us will have been enjoying the summer weather in recent weeks, whether here in the North East or on holiday in warmer climes - but one side-effect of the sunshine can put a damper on things.

While sunscreen is a must-have at this time of year, it’s also notoriously messy - and the unsightly yellow stains it leaves behind on clothes can threaten to ruin your holiday wardrobe. But if you find that a regular wash isn’t cutting it, there’s more than one easy way to remove the marks without resorting to bleach or other chemicals.

One cleaning pro recently explained what causes the stubborn stains, and showed that a couple of kitchen cupboard staples can help get clothes looking brand new again, the Liverpool Echo reports . TikTok user @jeeves_ny told followers that the yellow marks are a result of avobenzone, a chemical ingredient that absorbs UV rays found in the majority of sun creams.

The expert advised applying an acidic product such as white vinegar or lemon juice to the stain, before covering the area with salt - making sure to do this as soon as you spot the stain, as the longer it is left on the material the more difficult it will be to remove. After leaving it to sit overnight and then throwing it in the wash as normal, the clip showed that the stain was nowhere to be seen.

Another TikTok user shared an alternative method for getting summer clothes looking pristine again. Author and This Morning guest Lynsey Crombie showed on her profile @Lynsey_Queenofclean that a generous helping of eucalyptus oil also works a treat on sunscreen stains.

Well-known for its ability to lift stubborn stains, eucalyptus oil is a handy natural product to have in your cleaning cupboard. Lynsey suggested wetting the stained garment under cold water, before applying the oil, washing as normal and letting the clothing dry in the sun.
