Cleaning expert says we've been using shoe racks incorrectly for years

A shoe rack is a very useful way to keep your shoes organised, particularly when there are various pairs of little feet running around the place.

But a cleaning expert has said that the majority of people are using their shoe rack incorrectly.

A rack can only hold so many pairs, meaning extras can be left lying about instead of stored away.

However, this busy mum-of-four has taken to social media to demonstrate one move that will fit a lot more pairs into your rack, reports the Mirror.

Cleaning blogger Joanne, who regularly shares storage solution-related hints and tips, has taken to TikTok to show exactly how you should be using your shoe rack all while making it appear much tidier.

Many people will just place their shoes along each rail of the rack, however, Joanne - who goes by the username @cleanwithjoanne - pops them through the poles, positioning them at an angle.

This leaves plenty of room to add more pairs of shoes, should you so wish, and also ensures they are fastened in place more securely in a way that helps avoid messy piles.

It is the perfect tip for those who find their shoe racks fill up too quickly (@cleanwithjoanne/TikTok)

Joanne recently demonstrated the hack in a handy TikTok video which has since clocked up more than 771.4K views and counting, showing first the incorrect, then the correct, way to position a shoe.

As simple as the hack may appear to be, many people have been left with their minds blown, being completely amazed that they've only just learned this very logical tip for themselves.

Some even admitted they'd previously chucked out similar racks, believing they were just too small for purpose, having been completely oblivious to the way they should have been used.

Many followers admitted to having no clue they could do this with their own shoe racks (@cleanwithjoanne/TikTok)

One impressed person wrote: "Always wondered why they had 'rails' rather than just shelves...thanks! Can't say this had occurred to me."

Another marvelled: "What?! Well, I feel stupid. However, now I can buy more shoes so thanks for sharing!"

A third individual commented: "Not me seeing this after I just put all my shoes on a new rack and they didn't all fit. I love this hack, guess I’m redoing them tomorrow."
