Clean-up messages spray-painted near drains at Renfrewshire high schools

Environmental messages have been spray-painted near drains at Renfrewshire high schools to encourage pupils to clean up after themselves.

Slogans including ‘the sea starts here, please don’t litter’ welcomed students upon their return from the Easter holidays as the council asked people to dispose of their rubbish in a responsible manner.

Messages like ‘stop the drop’ can also be found on public bins, which are located on the way to the hot food vendors often used at lunchtime.

The measures – which form part of the wider Team Up to Clean Up campaign – were detailed in a report to Tuesday’s communities and housing policy board.

It also confirmed 22 presentations were delivered to primary and secondary schools in advance of the Big Spring Clean which launched on Monday, April 17, and was due to come to an end on Sunday, May 14.

These focused on creating civic pride by concentrating on the impact of litter on wildlife, the environment, climate change and the local community.

The report added: “Secondary school pupils were greeted on return from their Easter holiday with stencils sprayed close to school’s gulleys, reinforcing the high-profile message to reduce plastics in our oceans.

“Public bins on the route to lunchtime takeaways have been visible and an increased bin provision has been delivered to Johnstone High.

“The supply will be rotated around each of the schools to encourage positive behavioural change.”
