The dining room is a hub for hosting, and as such, a hub for displaying the best and brightest furnishings and accessories. However, there is something to be said about a minimalist dining space. Case in point? Claudia Schiffer's Scandi-inspired room.
The German model and star of films such as Argylle and Love Actually recently shared a photo to her Instagram page of her dining area, and we were immediately drawn to her warm, modern-meets-minimal furniture, including a smooth, wood table, woven chairs, and fresh-cut flowers in a glass vase. It's Scandinavian decor done right.
There's even a hint of Schiffer's own design flair in the dining room– those familiar with her Bordallo Pinheiro collaboration may recognize the signature butterflies dotting the ceramic dishes and tea cups, adding whimsy to the tablescape.
A design trend that emerged in the early 20th century, Scandinavian decor has seen new iterations in styles, but maintains some core pillars that are highly appealing among modern home-owners today.
'Scandinavian interior designs are characterized by clean lines, natural hues, and organic materials – especially wood, ' says Neel Bradham CEO of global flooring brand Parador. 'This look often calls to mind pale, whitewashed wood floors, but don’t be afraid to draw on rustic, darker woods as well. A smoked walnut flooring, for example, adds the perfect amount of drama and contrast to what is otherwise a bright, airy space.'
When it comes to flooring ideas, Scandi-style wood looks great in a dining space; alternatively, Schiffer has opted for modern, gray flooring in contrast to her natural, wood furniture, which creates a contemporary look in a dining space.
Scandi style is also characterized by a warm, inviting atmosphere, that, as Bradham explains, can be summed up in a simple term.
'This is especially great for creating an inviting, warm ambiance and embracing the Scandinavian concept of ‘hygge’ – a term which describes a mood of coziness, defined by feelings of wellness and contentment,' he states.
The woven seat of Schiffer's dining chairs contributes to this 'hygge' feeling, with textural details and reminiscence of a calming, natural surrounding. We could also see cream-colored cushions working well to further soften the space.
While Schiffer has mostly stuck to neutrals as the main color palette in her dining area, experts say that natural-inspired shades can make their way into a Scandi-style space.
'To recreate the Scandi look in your home you must keep four things in mind, including minimalism, functionality, natural and light,' says interior designer at Victoria Plum, Ruth Foster.
She continues, 'Create a clean, sleek style by incorporating contemporary products with an uplifting, neutral palette ranging from off-white to sage green. While also introducing natural materials such as bamboo, rattan, linen, and pine to bring the Scandi look to life with organic materials and textures. These additions emphasize the minimalism and simplicity of this interior style without compromising on the beautiful design.'
