Classic Edinburgh Lothian bus pops up for sale - on the other side of the world

A Lothian bus from Edinburgh described as a 'one of a kind item' with 'endless opportunities' is up for £41,000 - but is more than 10,000 miles away in Australia.

The 1966 vehicle was a number 16 travelling from Colinton through Tollcross along Princes Street to Leith. Yet somehow the service has ended up in Bangalee, a small suburb of New South Wales.

Images show the maroon bus with many original features such as authentic badges, timetables, interior adverts, seats, bells, and hand-painted interior signage.

It also proudly bears the iconic 16 bus number that hasn't been changed since its life on Edinburgh roads decades ago.

The fascinating item was imported to Australia in 2014 and was fully restored before the trip across the world. It is reportedly roadworthy and mechanically sound so can be put back on the roads.

The seller wrote: "This is a ‘one off’, rare opportunity, to purchase an iconic, original, vintage, Scottish Bus, as you can no longer import vintage buses from the UK; it is not a viable proposition, with the current asbestos laws.

"This is a rare opportunity, to secure a vintage totally original, 1966, Leyland Atlantean Double Decker Bus, ex-Edinburgh, Scotland imported into Australia, 2014.

"The body had been completely restored, prior to 2014. The exterior paintwork now needs attention, but the interior is in perfect condition."

She continued: In the photos, you can see under the damaged photos, the all-new aluminium body panels. The whole bus was re-panelled, prior to the original paintwork being applied.

"There is definitely no rust in the body or chassis but some minor damage to the fibreglass front panel which is an easy fix.

"The bus is mechanically sound, with a big 680 Leyland engine, an overhauled semi-automatic transmission 2016, reconditioned radiator."

The seller explained: "There is one of this bus/type / make / model, left in working condition, in the world – this is it!

"A real ‘show stopper! The bus is totally original, from bottom to top. It has all original badges, timetables, interior adverts, seats, bells, and hand-painted interior signage with original Edinburgh details. The possibilities for this bus are endless."

"The vehicle is currently unregistered but has been on full NSW registration and historic plates, in Australia, since import.

"The bus can be driven on a permit, and driven anywhere in Australia, on an MR license. Everything works as it should. If you want a showpiece, here it is."
