Clashes and smoke bombs thrown as loyalists protest Irish Unity march in Glasgow

Ugly scenes have broken out in Glasgow as rival Irish republicans and loyalists clashed.

Police have blocked a road as trouble flared following a Irish Unity march and counter protest.

Govan Road was shut off by police vans and riot police were also sent to the scene.

Witnesses reported smoke bombs being used.

Road signs and bottles have been thrown, the Daily Record reports .

Wheelie bins have also been set on fire.

Dozens of  police  officers – including mounted police – raced to the area to keep the situation under control.

Loyalists - chanting "No IRA on our streets" – set up a makeshift barrier across Govan Road outside St Anthony's Church.

Riot police with dogs then moved in and dispersed the crowd.

An Irish unity march, organised by the James Connolly Republican Flute Band, was planned to start at 6.30pm in Elder Park, Govan.

Counter protests are reported to have been organised by loyalists groups.

Glasgow City Council advised of the road block in a traffic bulletin and Govan Subway Station also closed due to the incident.

Glasgow City Council said: "Due to an ongoing Police incident Govan Road is blocked between Golspie Street and Elder Street.

"Drivers are advised to avoid the area if possible."

A middle-aged couple stopped in their car in front of the cordon on Govan Road said they were unable to get to their home.

The woman, who asked not to be named, said: “It’s ridiculous in this day and age. You could tell something was kicking off earlier but we had no idea it would get this bad.”
