Clarke provides Anderson update after midfielder's Scotland withdrawal

Scotland boss Steve Clarke has provided an update on the status of Newcastle midfielder Elliot Anderson after the player's withdrawal from the national side squad.

The 20-year-old was called up for the first time after previously representing the country at under-21 level.

However, he left the camp after sustaining an injury and Clarke confirmed the player was struggling with a knock.

Anderson is also eligible to play for England and Clarke has admitted it is out of his control whether the midfielder will continue to declare for Scotland in the future.

He said: "It’s not something I can control. There’s not a lot I can do about it.”

When asked if the 60-year-old sought any assurances from the midfielder before his departure, he responded: "No, he just went home."

Scotland take on Cyprus in Euro 2024 qualifying on Friday September 8, as they look to remain top of their qualifying group, before facing England at Hampden in a friendly four days later.
