Clan edged out by Steelers as winning streak ends in Sheffield

Clan saw their four-game winning streak come to an end as Sheffield Steelers edged to victory in a 3-2 overtime success.

The point sees Clan move into the top half of the table, ahead of Guildford Flames who they face on Saturday.

But it won’t be much consolation as the Braehead Arena outfit were beaten in the extra period in Sheffield for the second time this season.

Chances seemed to be few and far between in a tepid first period, with Clan the team who took their chance with an early goal.

Matt Haywood battled for the puck at the boards, with Rodney Southam taking it on and sending his shot, via a deflection, past Steelers goalie Barry Brust for the opening goal.

Clan’s netminder Shane Starrett was called into action to make a great save, denying Robert Dowd in space in front of the crease.

Colin Campbell went close shortly after, but could only find the side netting as the visitors looked to increase their lead before the first break.

Steelers looked sharper in the second as Tanner Eberle tested Starrett, but was denied, then Brust pulled two good saves in relatively quick succession, preventing chances from Colton Yellow Horn and Mathieu Roy.

The pressure paid off for Aaron Fox’s men when the home side swept up the ice and Marc-Olivier Vallerand’s shot rebounding off Starrett.

However, Evan Mosey despatched it into the net on the rush to equalise and it was all square again.

Dowd was denied again, this time from a call from the referee after Matias Sointu was called for holding right before the GB international had finished off a low effort.

Steelers kept the pressure up in the third period as Starrett saved a good shot on the turn by home captain Jonathan Phillips.

But a breakaway saw them edge in front as Martin Latal, rampaging up the right, fed into the centre where Vallerand was in the perfect shot to send it into the net.

Malcolm Cameron’s team responded in kind with their own break as Yellow Horn set up Guillaume Gauthier, who toe-dragged it to the inside and delivered past Brust.

Mitch Jones struck the post as both sides went for it in the final five minutes, but it needed overtime to settle things.

And that’s where Justin Hodgman took advantage of the puck as it popped away from Starrett to nick the win for the home side.
